What is Influenza?
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious viral infection that primarily affects the respiratory system. It is caused by the influenza virus and can lead to symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea. The flu can range from mild to severe and can cause complications, particularly in vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with chronic health conditions. It spreads easily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and the best prevention is through annual vaccination.
What is the flu jab?
The flu jab is a vaccination that helps protect against the influenza virus, which can cause severe illness, especially in vulnerable groups. It works by stimulating the body's immune system to produce antibodies, reducing the risk of infection and lessening the severity of symptoms if you do catch the flu. The vaccine is updated annually to match the most common flu strains and is recommended for those at higher risk, including older adults, pregnant women, and people with underlying health conditions.
When should I get the flu jab?
The flu vaccine should be taken annually, as the influenza virus constantly changes, and each year's vaccine is updated to protect against the most common strains. Getting vaccinated every year ensures you have the best possible protection, especially as immunity from the previous vaccine decreases over time.
The flu vaccine is best taken in the autumn, ideally between September and early December, before flu season peaks. This allows your body time to build immunity before flu viruses become more widespread in winter. However, you can still get vaccinated later in the season if necessary, as flu can circulate for several months. It is particularly important for vulnerable groups, such as older adults, pregnant women, and those with chronic health conditions, to stay up to date with their flu jab.
Side effects of the flu jab
Most people experience only mild and temporary side effects from the flu jab, if any. Common side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, as well as a low-grade fever or muscle aches. These side effects usually go away within a few days. Serious side effects are rare, but like any vaccine, the flu jab can cause an allergic reaction in very sensitive individuals. If you experience any severe reactions, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face and throat, you should seek medical attention immediately. Overall, the benefits of getting vaccinated far outweigh the risks of potential side effects.
